Last Sunday we picked up some Aussie friends, David and Nicoly, from the airport and made our way out of Paris. Traffic heavy, not sure where to go – thanks goodness for our Tom-Tom!! We then drove on to Rocamadour, arriving after dark. We were really hanging out for some food and with a great selection of restaurants in the village we weren’t disappointed. The village is amazing – so full of character and history. It has a very famous historical church built on top of a cliff, overlooking the village. It’s been a really important destination for pilgrims over the centuries. Roccamadour’s narrow, winding and sometimes steep streets have been a joy to explore. Old character houses often fronting the street, stone arches, lovely views. Our gite is also amazing. Four quite narrow floors – a new level built every century or so. Because of the steepness of the village and the lack of land, the only way to extend was up! All part of building a village on the side of a cliff.
Reg and I had a day trip to Cahors and visited some local vineyards. No cellar doors open so we didn’t get to taste any wine. Apparently everything closes for a siesta in the middle of the day. On another day out all four of us climbed into our hire car and headed off to visit Cordes-sur-Ciel – another famous medieval village. More amazing old buildings and characterful streets. Beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. We then drove on to Albi – quite a large city further south. Went to see the very famous Cathédral Ste-Cécile – built in the 13th century. Every surface inside is painted with beautiful religious scenes. Albi was very busy and we ended up stuck in a traffic jam. A car had stalled and we somehow ended up next to it. Bit of a language barrier but we were asked for help – hand gestures said it all. It all ended well – jumper leads are always handy!
We will drive to Bordeaux in the morning. Drop David and Nicoly at the train station – they are heading into Paris. We’ll then drop off the hire car at the Bordeaux Airport and fly to Dublin, Ireland. Its been a busy week!
Cheers Di and Reg
