Hi everyone…well here we are, last day in Corfino and we feel a little sad. Went to lunch today at the local restaurant and again (our second visit) the pasta was sensational. Equal to Clappis pasta! Have got to know the owners of the restaurant a little, so it has been nice to have that contact. They lived in the US for many years before returning home to Corfino so they speak English – makes life easier for us non-Italian speakers. We carry our little Italian Dictionary everywhere which helps with deciphering signs, menus, shopping and laundromat instructions. We will now have to brush up on our very limited French as we cross the border into France tomorrow.
We had a huge day out yesterday, drove to Siena via the motorways – unfortunately lots of traffic, pretty much at a stand still. We didn’t realize it was a public holiday and everyone was out and about! Anyway, we left the motorway as quickly as we could only to do a big loop and end up back on it again – in the middle of the same traffic jam we had tried to escape! Tom-Tom loves to take you back onto the main roads! When we tried to get off at the next exit, we got in the wrong toll line and had to back out, making all the cars behind us back out as well! We had already put our motorway ticket in the wrong machine so had to try and explain our predicament to the toll collection person who only spoke Italian. But, it all ended well and we headed off to Siena!
Siena was wonderful. A medieval city set on a hill top. There are two major squares; one with a huge parade ground, the other at the top most point of the city – a large ornate cathedral in its centre. Now, we happened to be there on May Day – a very important holiday in Italy. The parade ground was filled with people, lots of colourful flags being waved, lots of excitement. A great spectacle! We grabbed an ice cream and watched for a while. We then walked up to the cathedral square and back again – checking out some little side streets on the way. We were ready for home – this time on country roads! Wonderful drive through the Tuscan countryside. Such a good day.
We will also be sad to say goodbye to our little black fiat. It has been perfect for all the mountain driving we have done. Reg has developed huge arm muscles with all the steering wheel manoeuvring, but staying here has been great – worth every twist and turn.
Well, arrive’derci to all. Will be in touch from Digne, Provence – our next house sit.
Lots of love
Di and Reg
PS We found a ATM that gave us cash!!!!
