To continue on from my last post…….the BBQ last night was different! Len and I bravely stood outside – BBQ tools in hand, meat sizzling, coats on, and a glass of red to to keep us warm. The usual shorts and t-shirts where replaced by raincoats and ugg boots. Our first English BBQ! No complaints though – great food, more great wine, and a lots of fun!
We had another day out today. Drove to Derbyshire to visit Len and Cheryl’s second home in the village of Calver – a apartment in an old converted mill. Drove past Chatsworth Estate on the way – huge stately home. Beautiful lake, gorgeous gardens. Didn’t stop for a visit – heaps of people and we had other plans. Len and Cheryl’s apartment is lovely – open plan living and great views. The whole apartment complex is really well done – the beautiful old mill house is set in secluded gardens with a little rushing stream; the the old water wheel still in working order. We had lunch at the very friendly village pub – traditional Sunday roast. Got to know some of the locals – a real sense of community in Calver. We then went for a drive up into the hills above the village. Very different to the flat farmland near the converted barn – Len and Cheryl’s main home – in Lincolnshire.
We drove home via Ashford-on-Water – a lovely quaint village, and stopped off at Monsal Head – great views of the Derbyshire Dales. Time for a break. Ended up sitting on a bench, looking out over the dales, eating an ice cream. Yum! Then off home after a relaxing day. Looking forward to another wonderful evening – great company, great food and wine. And maybe an early night!
Off to Dorset tomorrow. Bus to London, then train to Crewkerne, Sommerset – our pick up point. It’s then just a short drive across the Dorset border to Drimpton – our next house sit. Looking forward to meeting Angela, Michael, and dogs Constance and Harry. Will be sad to say goodbye to Len and Cheryl. A quick visit – but we’ve enjoyed ourselves heaps!
Love to all
Di and Reg
