Hi everyone,
We are cleaning and packing today, ready to leave Digne, heading for the UK. It has been a great stay, the area is far more beautiful than we hoped, and we hoped for a lot!! A wonderful house sit.
We drove south to Verdon Gorge on Tuesday. We traveled in an anti-clockwise loop, leaving the main road to Nice and heading for Moustiers-Ste-Marie – gorgeous mountain top village – and then on to Lac de Ste Croix. The Verdon River runs along the floor of the Verdon Gorge and empties itself into the lake. Lots of camping spots, holiday parks and hiking tracks in the area. Very rugged and unspoiled. We followed the road deep into the gorge, visiting Palud-sur-Verdon – another lovely village – and on. The gorge road is amazing. Sometimes climbing high above the river, other times winding along the valley floor nearly touching it’s edge. The road is very narrow and often cut into the side of the cliff – very strange to drive under the overhang! This all made for interesting driving. Especially with lot of cars, motor bikes and cyclists also sharing the road – very busy. And we’re still adjusting to being on the other side of the road! Slowly getting used to it but still wouldn’t drive on my own!
We then drove on to Castellane. It has an interesting church sitting on top of a huge rock that towers over the village. Just seems to rise up out of no-where. As we drove up into the mountains again we could look back on it – amazing.
We’ve debated whether to visit Marseille while in Digne but haven’t got there. Big cities always seem to be last on our list! They can have a lot to offer – Paris was wonderful and we are looking forward to getting a quick look at London next Monday – but we just love the beauty and pace of the countryside. I guess the ideal would be to have an apartment in Paris and a country estate to grow a few grapes! Just a thought!
Cheers and much love
Di and Reg
