We decided to hire a car over this 4 day long week end. We picked it up from Yeovil – a large town near here and headed off to Lyme Regis on the south coast. A very touristy but beautiful seaside village, great beach, and a small sheltered marina. We parked further up into town and walked down to the harbour. Lots of little side streets and little shops on the way. The beach is very wide and sweeping, lovely views over to hills across the bay. Stones, not the white sand we are used to in Australia. Looks great but wouldn’t be easy to walk on with bare feet!
There is a walkway between the water’s edge and some buildings that curve along the shore line – including cafes, an ice cream shop, colourful houses and beach huts. Little seats on the edge of the walkway looking out to sea. What a place to sit and stay awhile – just take it all in. The marina is also lovely. Lots of boats nestled inside – very protected. There is a surrounding stone wall that sweeps around the marina, passing in front of the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium, before heading back towards the shore. Just leaving a small opening- big enough for the boats to come and go. This sea wall is known as the Cobb Wall and is wide enough for a walkway along the top. It also has an arm that branches off, curving away from the marina, heading out towards the open sea. It’s very famous. If you’ve seen the movie “The French Lieutenants Woman” you might remember a scene with Meryl Streep standing at the end of a sea wall, wearing a hooded black cape; the sea crashing about her – well that’s it!! We weren’t tempted to repeat her efforts though – the sea was pretty wild and the wind was blowing a gale out there. Anyway, just a little bit of trivia for you all!
I’m including a photo of me with an ice cream. The day was a bit chilly but I don’t think it would ever be too chilly for an ice cream. The ice cream here is fantastic and while on the subject of food the strawberries are out of this world. More trivia I guess, but there you go! I’ll stop before I begin to waffle.
Cheers again
Di and Reg
