Today was our last hire car day so we made the most of it. We did use it yesterday but just stayed in the local area, visited some local villages, and attended a local church. Lovely day – good to catch our breath. But this morning we were back on the road again. We started off in West Bay, on the Dorset coast directly south of here. A great little village with a large marina area and impressive sheer cliffs edging the coast. Got chatting to a couple that were also visiting the area – they were kind enough to take some photos of us together. Doesn’t happen very often – usually one of us does the posing while the other aims the camera. I liked West Bay. It had a lovely feel.
Next we followed the coast to the Isle of Portland – near Weymouth. The island isn’t really an island anymore. It’s called a tied island – more of a peninsula. Deposits of limestone have formed a land bridge to the mainland. So we crossed the land bridge – quite amazing! – and drove up to a lookout sitting above the main town on the island – Fortuneswell. Wonderful views looking back towards Weymouth and the coast. Could also get a real idea of just how narrow the land bridge is. Spent some time driving around, checking out the island’s countryside and beautiful coastline before visiting the Portland Bill Lighthouse on its southern most tip. Then it was off home – this time through Dorchester – another big loop and another big day. Our little hire car has had a hammering!
Love Di and Reg!
