We’ve had a bit of a look at the wine around here – predominately Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. We headed off with Herve to Chateau-de-Villeneuve and then Gratien & Meyer, two wineries/caves the other side of Saumur. The first ended up being a very social occasion with an American couple, Pauline and John, tasting at the same time. Looked like nice wine, but I can’t offer any more than that. Unfortunately I was the designated driver! Gratin & Meyer was bigger and flasher, the service very attentive and professional. Not the same feel as the previous winery but still good. Reg and Herve certainly seemed to enjoy themselves! One very interesting wine was their Rose – made from Pinot Noir. Very pale and “apparently” very nice.
While in Saumur we had a yummy lunch and a little wander around the town centre. One house we walked past was the birth place of Coco Chanel – just a bit of local history! Saumur seemed a nice town – not too big with a relaxed feel. Lots of character – lovely side streets and little squares. And quite an impressive Chateau Saumur overlooking the river and town. Just stopped by for a quick visit.
We called into a little village called Cunault on the way home and checked out its church. It was huge for such a small village, incredibly high ceilings with big pillars, white sandstone walls, and a great stone floor. Not ornate, but impressive in its simplicity. What I loved most was the old worn steps into the church and its very old wooden front door. The wood was such a beautiful contrast to all the smooth white stone. This sandstone is found locally and used in lots of local buildings. We also visited the village hall and watched some locals play the “Boule de Fort” a very old and rare form of boules played in this area. The balls are made of very hard wood with a steel cuff that needs to be polished before and after every game. It was very interesting to watch and we were made very welcome. Herve enjoyed chatting with the locals. We arrived home tired but it was a great day out.
Lots of love
Di and Reg
