- Eastern Loire – a quick visit
The drive to our B&B near Precy was interesting! Our little Tom-Tom has the odd siesta around lunch time – very French! – and we ended up kilometres away from our destination. After spending ages working out where we were and which way we should go – “I think that way is north” – she suddenly came to life and we were on our way. We now have a map of France in the car – it helps to be able to at least point at something when asking for directions. But no complaints – getting lost does have its advantages. Tom-Tom took us on a lovely drive cross country and we arrived in Precy with time to spare. Just another little adventure!
Our B&B is wonderful. A renovated farmhouse with heaps of character and a great lawn and garden area. Owners Peter and Jayne are English, but traded English weather for a life in France around three years ago. They have spent most of that time changing a very basic and run down house into a lovely home. We had a great dinner with them and other guests – Chris and Willy from NZ – the night we arrived. Great food and wine and lots of fun. On Sunday morning we visited the village market in nearby Herry before heading off to Sancerre. We passed through some very productive flat farmland on the way – reminded me of Australia! Sancerre is a both a town and wine area – very famous for its Savignon Blanc. The town itself is set on a hilltop with wonderful views over the vineyards in the valley. Very touristy but beautiful and worth the visit. We checked out a couple of cellar doors in the town. We then stopped off in a little local village for lunch before arriving home in time to watch the Wimbledon final between Federer and Rodick. Many hours later – what a match!! – we retired to the terrace for wine and nibbles. Beautiful weather; great sunset over the surrounding gardens and farmland.
Yesterday Reg and I set off for the very cute village of Apremont, situated on the Canal Lateral a la Loire. Just one of the many canals built to move people and produce around France. Some parts of the canal system are hundreds of years old and it is amazing to see the engineering used to build them. Very impressive. After our little outing we joined Peter and Jayne and visited a small winery in Pouilly Fume – near Sancerre. The owner Claude was a lot of fun but you had to watch him like a hawk – your glass seemed to mysteriously refill when you weren’t looking! Jayne was the driver – yeh!! – so I enjoyed a taste. Claude only makes Sauvignon Blanc and is passionate – to say the least – about his wine. He rarely bothers to drink anything else – when asked what red he likes he just shrugs and screws up his nose. We returned to “Le Grand Coudray” our B&B and enjoyed yet another wonderful meal! If we put on weight during our time in Precy we are blaming Jayne!!!!!
Off to Liernais today – our new house sit.
Much love Di and Reg
