We left Barr yesterday morning – up and about for an early start – and crossed back into Germany. This time into the northern part of the Black Forest. The Black Forest was an area on my “must do” list, and while we had dipped into its southern end when we camped at Titisee I was very keen to see more. We decided, as per usual, to take the windy, off the beaten track, scenic route. As much as we could anyway! We drove to Oppenau and stopped for some photos – and why not!! Absolutely stunning. It was then on to the Lake Mummelsee area – again lovely views – continually stopping to take photos – making the most of the drive. All too soon we began to wind our way down to the plains below. Back to civilization – towns and distant countryside stretching out before us. A bit sad to leave the Black Forest behind!
Next it was the motorway – always good when you want to get from A to B quickly. And this motorway was fast!!! Traffic just roaring along. Not a lot of speed restrictions on the motorways in Germany. Quite scary really when your’e not used to it! I was the driver – probably not the best choice – but I managed. The next couple of hours or so were spent racing along, trying not to annoy too may other drivers. It was hot in the car – no air-conditioning – but if you opened the windows it felt you were in a hot air wind tunnel!! We finally pulled off the motorway to briefly visit Worm – famous for the “Diet of Worms” where Luther was declared a heretic – 1521. We had a little wander around the city streets and visited an information centre before having a very welcome cuppa in the car park. Advantage of having our camping gear on board!
We continued north – next task to find a camp site for the night. We put “camp site” in Tom-Tom and followed her directions. We ended up (it’s a long story!) in a locked private camp site. Quite a large camp with permanent residents living in little streets in their caravans etc. Like a village. We, on the other hand, weren’t meant to be there and with the gate locked behind us were stuck! We were finally able to escape – slipped out when some innocent person unlocked the gate for friends – and quickly continued towards Rudesheim. Tom-Tom had told us there was another camp site there and we were counting on it being open to the public!
Rudesheim is a small village on the Rhine. Its camp site is gorgeous – sitting on the river – and very open to the public! We arrived hot and tied after a long days travel. Found a great spot – on the edge of the camp site with beautiful views of the Rhine. We set up our tent, had a little rest, and then hit the showers. With us clean and the washing done – handy fence nearby for drying – it was time to just chill and enjoy. Now I haven’t mentioned it yet but yesterday was a special day – our tenth wedding anniversary. We celebrated while sitting in our little tent, drinking a very good red wine, watching the barges make their way along the river, with the sun setting on the water. Not a bad way to end an interesting day!
