We left Lahnstein and headed for the town of Koblenz – it sits right where the Moselle runs into the Rhine. We made a left turn and drove south along the valley; following the Moselle. It’s Sunday today so very hard to find any caves/cellar doors open but the scenery again was lovely – steep hills full of vineyards running down to the river. Some interesting ways of working the vines here. The hills are steep so little mono rails are used to take people up the hill and workers stand on the steep slops spraying the vines by hand. Makes our Aussie vineyards look easy! Lots more beautiful villages on the way. It’s really a double whammy! It’s not just appreciating the villages you pass through, it’s also appreciating the ones over the river, on the other side. Both are spectacular!
We found a great camp site early afternoon – near Wehlen. Great views over the Moselle. Lots of people – seems like a semi-residential camp site. Small, neat gardens around peoples homes. Had heaps of little conversations as we walked about. Also noticed – and we have noticed before – lots of number plates from the Netherlands. They must be keen travelers. After setting up camp and checking things out we drove to the nearby village of Graach. There’s a large vineyard/winery called Graacher Himmelreich in the village – they were open so we tasted some wine and sat for a while enjoying the view.
We’ve had a great night tonight! Made friends with a young couple from Belgium – Tom and Cindy – who are camping with their little boy Lucas. Their tent is right next to ours. A wonderful couple – both teachers so on school holidays. Also speak excellent english. It was lovely to sit in the cool of the evening, with some local white wine, having a chat.
Time for bed – another early start tomorrow. Always on the move – but loving it!
Love again
Di and Reg
