We have made the wine!! The grapes were ready – a little earlier than expected – so we set to work. Two very full on days. Leah, Shev, Noelle, Laurence and Reg picked their little hearts out. I cooked the scones for morning tea, prepared meals, cheered them on from the sidelines, and gave the odd massage. But picking wasn’t the hardest task. The ancient wooden press made our old hydraulic basket press from “Purple Hands” look easy. I think photos will give a better feel for what was involved than anything I could write. Jayne and Peter – friends from the B&B in Precy – arrived just as we finished work on the second day and joined in the celebrations. The juice was checked out by the very tired but happy wine makers – Reg and Noelle – and given the nod of approval.
Had B&B guests arrive yesterday – executives from L’Oreal. They have a office/factory near here. Although we had closed for the season we could hardly say no!! So bedrooms were prepared and the welcoming committee on hand. Small group of three from the USA and Paris. Really lovely. They already had a commitment for dinner so no 5 course meal to prepare. But we were on breakfast duty so up early again and back into the swing of things. Actually enjoyed it – felt like old hands!
Off tomorrow – leaving the chateau. Plans have finally been made. We are driving with Leah and Shev to Antwerp, Belgium – picking up a hire car tomorrow morning. We are staying with Annick – Caroline’s friend. Off again after a couple of days for a night in Amsterdam – then we’ll catch the train to Copenhagen and on to Oslo, Leah and Shev will drive on to the French Alps for their next house sit. Took awhile but we got there! Looking forward to our travels.
Love again
Di and Reg
