We said goodbye to our friends in Antwerp and headed off for Amsterdam. More of the name an animal game on the way – still making our way through the alphabet. Still lots of laughs and re-writing of the rules! Arrived and settled into our hotel – right on the edge of one of the larger canals. Organized parking for our hire car – exorbitant! I guess the price reflects the lack of parking spaces in Amsterdam. We then just took off and explored. Walked along the many canals and winding streets of the city, checking out the odd cafe. Nice to sit and just watch life happen. Saw lots of little businesses and museums dedicated to cannabis – its history and production. Its legal in the Netherlands. But not really our thing!
Up early the next morning for more exploring. Found out about a free concert being held in a local entertainment centre/theatre so all four of us lined up with the crowd and had a great time. I think it was a pre-performance run made open to the public by a famous orchestra. Very high standard! Coffee at the theatre before more walking the canals and streets. So much character – so different. Very well preserve old buildings. Lots of boats on the canals. Bicycles everywhere on the streets – parents have these little “carriages” for their children to ride in. So nice not to have heaps of cars about with all their pollution and noise. Checked out a local market before having to collect our bags and say goodbye to Leah and Shev. We caught an overnight train to Copenhagen, Leah and Shev stayed another night in Amsterdam. They kept our hire car for further travels back into Belgium, Holland again, then on through Germany, France and Switzerland, making their way to their next work/house sit in a ski lodge in the French Alps. House sitting is never dull!! We might catch up with them in London in early December.
Love
Di and Reg xx
