Really enjoyed Alesund – such a clean and colourful town. It’s situated on a long narrow peninsula, almost surrounded by sea. Beautiful setting. Major sea port – lots of cruise ships drop by as they travel up the Norway coast. Also the main shopping centre for the area – a real buzz about the place. Population of around 40,000. After our positive experiences in Bergen and Stryn we had booked into another hostel in Alesund. But this one was DISGUSTING!!! I washed everything before we used it in the kitchen. YUK, YUK, YUK!!. All the kitchen cupboard handles were broken – maintenance was pretty bad everywhere, the bathrooms dirty. The dishwasher was so grotty I was in shock. But we had a large dorm to ourselves which was surprisingly clean and the beds were comfy. The owner was negative about everything so maybe he needed a long holiday! We did get to chat to a couple of guests – two Polish guys who were in Norway for work. Felt sorry for them living at the hostel though!!
We left Alesund and drove along the coast to Kristiansund and then on to Aure. Such an interesting drive. There’s a road that skirts the Atlantic Ocean hopping from island to island – amazing award winning bridges curving and dipping – joining one island to the next. Was voted Norway’s “Engineering Feat of the Century” and is considered the most beautiful drive in the world. Hence why we chose that route! Also crossed different stretches of the sea on numerous ferries. Briefly visited Kristiansund – looked lovely. Impressive harbour and more colourful buildings.
We stayed in Aure last night – little village on a beautiful narrow harbour about an hour or so’s drive north of Kristiansund. Ended up finding a really nice hotel. Hot shower and a rest much needed after a busy day. A real Norway breakfast this morning – pickled seal, cold meats, hard boiled eggs and cheeses on the menu. All part of the experience! We then drove to Trondheim and caught an afternoon flight to Tromso. All straight forward. Have checked into our hotel – cheap, cheerful and clean! – and are ready to just chill – literally. Tromso is in the Arctic Circle and it’s late November!
Well that’s it for now
Love as always
Di and Reg
