We left Stryn this morning to drive over the mountains to Geiranger and then on to Alesund. We were advised that the road was still open and there were big signs up confirming all was okay. Lovely drive up the mountainside. Not long until we ran into some snow on the side of the road but all was fine. After going through a tunnel, we turned left off the main road and continued to climb. The snow got thicker, and thicker, until we were hardly able to see the road. Thank goodness for the guard rails and some still visible tire tracks – something to follow. We passed a sign saying we were 1300 meters above sea level. Then it started to snow – luckily no other traffic coming the other way. We were very grateful when we started to descend. Steep incline and icy surface for a few kilometres but it had stopped snowing and we could see the road. I don’t think there has ever been a car driven more slowly over that mountain top. For the locals of course this is normal – but not for a couple of Aussies!!! As we continued to wind down the mountain we were treated to some lovely views over Geiranger and back along the Storfjorden fiord. We drove through the village and then climbed again. More beautiful views as we looked back the way we had come – Gieranger sitting at the very end of the fiord and at the base of the mountain we had just crossed – what a position. Then there was the stunning view of the Storfjorden as it turned a corner and headed towards the village – so narrow with amazingly steep cliffs. Didn’t know which way to look! The mountain road was free of snow, we drove down into the next valley and were happily on our way to Alesund.
Now Alesund is a bit different. The city burnt down in the early 1900’s and was completely rebuilt – not wood this time, stone only. It is very pretty, everything looks neat as all the buildings are from that particular era and built in a similar style. The city is surrounded by water and all the cruise ships visit. Have had a quick drive around the town and have booked into our hostel – more about that later!! Rugging up for a walk to see more before it gets dark. All for now.
