We had lots of icy mornings and frosty days our first week back in Tomich – bitterly cold. Much harder to handle than snow. Very ‘hairy’ walking the dogs – we soon learn’t how to pick those dangerous ice patches and became very proficient at “ice skating” if we took off unexpectedly. We’ve been revisiting some old walking spots including Glen Affrick and Plodda Falls. They’ve built a new lookout that sticks out over the edge of Plodda Falls – gives a whole new view of the water tumbling over its edge. Very impressed. We’ve had lots of walks into the village and up into the hills above – Tomich is surrounded by hills. There’s a farm up there with numerous barns and a large farmhouse. Also accommodation for visitors. Met a local man taking his baby for a walk – so different from pushing a pram in Australia!!
We had a little bit of snow on Friday and Saturday before heavier falls on Sunday. About 8 inches on the ground Monday morning and kept going all day. But nothing compared to this morning!! Absolutely amazing. Thick layers of snow on everything – the outdoor table looks like it’s covered in a gigantic layer of white icing. Our little hire car and Gill’s horse trailer are covered, the driveway not visible. Think we will have to do a lot of digging if we want to get the car out today – it’s not going to happen! Interesting feeding the horses this morning – snow up to our knees in places! Dark heavy sky – more snow on the way! Yeah!
Still taking the dogs for their morning and afternoon walks – we absolutely love walking in the snow. In fact, I think we’ve probably got a bit of a reputation around here – namely the crazy Aussies!! It seems to follow us where ever we go! We all went for a walk into the village quite late the other night. It was snowing and well below freezing. But it was not as bad as it sounds. The snow was gently drifting down, beautifully captured in the glow of the street lights, just touching our faces as we walked – and so soft and fluffy underfoot. The dogs where pulling on their leads, really pacing it out. Enjoying themselves. The air was still, so while it was cold it felt okay. Not a person in sight, everyone else was tucked away inside – we had the village street to ourselves – no surprises there! It was amazing.
We are enjoying the snow so much we can hardly believe we will soon be back in the Aussie heat. Don’t know how we’ll survive. The 12 month limit on our return flights is nearly up – this Tomich house sit is our last. We are heading home on the 7th January – arriving on the morning of the 9th. Looking forward to catching up with family and friends.
Cheers for now
Much love
