After digging the car out of the snow in Tomich – not easy – Reg and I headed off for Cornwall. Roads were rather difficult but we crossed the border into England just before the M9 closed behind us. We stayed the night in the Lake District in a motel on the edge of the M6 and continued on the next day. The weather was deteriorating but we made it to Port Isaac in Cornwall without any major problems.
How cute is Port Isaac!!! It’s very famous as the village of Port Wenn in the the TV series ‘Doc Martin’ – we really enjoyed it when it was on TV in Australia. We stayed with Mike and Rachel – fellow Aussie house sitters – who are staying in Port Isaac for the winter. They are renting a house that looks across the harbour to Doc Martins surgery. Their house is also on the edge of a large courtyard that’s used as the school yard playground in the series. All very exciting! It was the first time we had met Mike and Rachel – but have had contact in the past through the house sit in Tomich. They are Gills regular house sitters so they know Tomich and the locals well. We just chatted away for hours. They have lived the house sitting life style for a few years, but are also able to work in the UK due to a less distant English ancestry. We drove over to nearby Padstow, walked along the beach, checked out the harbour, and had fish and chips at the very famous Rick Steins cafe. Very yummy! A very relaxed visit.
Reg and I left Pt Isaac yesterday afternoon and drove along the A35 to Dorset. Again our timing was good – the A35 closed this morning! We are staying with Ann and Nicola – friends we met in Tromso, Norway. They ‘unfortunately’ offered us a bed if we were passing and we’ve taken them up on it. That’ll teach them! We’ve met so many great people on our travels – made so may good friends. We realize how spoiled we have been!
Well this is it!! We are nearly at the end of our 12 months away – we drop off our hire car in London and fly home tomorrow evening. Need to actually get to Heathrow of course – huge snow falls all over the UK. Lots of difficulties in getting about, snow ploughs working double time. Also airports closed everywhere – but so far Heathrow is okay. Anyway time will tell!!
Thank you all so much for coming along for the ride – it’s felt like we had packed you in our suitcases and taken you with us everywhere we’ve gone! It’s been fun!
Cheers and lots of love
Di and Reg
