Hi everyone…we are in Northland staying with friends in Whangarei. Our tent is yet to be used – camping gear all neatly tucked away in the boot.
What have we been up to? Not heaps really! We left Greytown on the 25th of October to travel north to Tirau. We had a great day travelling; dropping into Stormy Point lookout in the Manawata, skirting around Mt Ruapehu, and heading up the west side of the Hauhungaroa Ranges rather than staying on the main highway. We had arranged to call in and meet Joy and Len – future house sit people that live on a dairy farm just out of Tirau. We ended up staying the night with them which was lovely. We had planned to move on to a nearby camp site but were very happy to be fed and watered (wine actually!) and climb into a very comfy bed. The thought of erecting our tent for the first time – always interesting! – after a long days travel wasn’t overly appealing.
We continued on the next day, taking the motorway through the centre of Auckland before turning off and heading towards Helensville. Not the most direct route to Whangarei but one we hadn’t travelled before. We shopped in Helensville and drove on until we found a nice lookout for lunch. We called in to see our old friend Gill when we arrived in Whangarei and ended up staying with her – again very spoilt! Have been for some lovely drives while we’ve been here, beautiful countryside and beaches. Went up to Cable Bay in the Far North to catch up with friends, stayed the night, and have now returned to Whangarei until this Thursday. We’ll then head back to Tirau to house sit for Joy and Len. Still lots of socializing to do before we go. We lived in Whangarei for 3-4 months a few years back so it’s been nice to catch up with people.
The more we travel NZ the more impressed we are – it is just so beautiful. Still heaps to see – but I guess that’s always the case no matter where you travel or how often you visit!
Cheers and love for now
Di and Reg
