We have settled in well to our house sit in Tirau – Longview dairy farm. The only negative has been the noise from State Highway One – runs along the bottom edge of the farm – unfortunately only a hundred meters from our house!! So our dairy farm house sit has ended up the noisiest one! We have gone for lots of drives and walks – it’s so handy having our own car. There’s heaps to see around here. The Waikato river runs through this region on it’s way to Auckland and the sea. There is also an amazing lake near us – Lake Karapiro – a real centre for water sports and camping. Beautiful views of both from a friends house just up the road – we’ve met them through the local church. Everyday they sit in their dining room and lounge and look down at the river as it winds along and the lake in the distance. Really breathtaking. The area is full of dairy farms, so very common to see lines of cows making their way to the milking shed either early in the morning or mid afternoon. We have visited our own milking shed and watched the cows go through their routine. Great views from lots of different vantage points on the farm – guess it’s called Longview for a reason!
Tirau itself is on the junction of the main highway and the main road to Rotorua so has lots of passing traffic. It’s also made a name for itself with corrugated iron artwork which looks really interesting perched on top of buildings and at the local school. The local Information Centre is a huge corrugated iron dog! Cambridge is the biggest local shopping town – about a half hour drive. Its a beautiful town; sits right on the river. Lovely drive back home through farmland and hills – much better than the State Highway! Going further afield soon – planning to visit friends near Whakatane and have a look at Rotorua.
Cheers again
Di and Reg
