Well here we are at Lake Taupo – a huge lake in the middle of the North Island of NZ. It has been a lovely break of quiet walks, reading, wine and nibbles, and some great home cooking – all sounds familiar I guess!! We have been lent a holiday house at Four Mile Bay – 4 miles along the lake from the town of Taupo. It has been a very comfortable, quiet, home away from home. The lake is beautiful – just a huge expanse of water with wonderful views. You can see the mountainous region of Mt Ruapahu to the south and the hills across the lake with their numerous villages and beautiful farmland. The town of Taupo itself is on the eastern coast of the lake, but also winds itself along the northern coast. This whole area is a popular summer destination for lots of Kiwis. Not so warm here at the moment but the town is still very busy due to the Rugby World Cup being held in NZ. Supporters from all over the world have arrived to watch the games. New Zealanders are hyper excited – the All Blacks are national heroes. We understand very little about the game but are learning fast.
We’ve had a couple of days out and about. Enjoyed visiting the Huka Falls on the outskirts of town. The falls are a part of the River Waikato which leaves Lake Taupo on its northern shore. A short distance from the lake the river is forced through a narrow channel before falling 9 meters – known as the Huka Falls. Volume is an amazing 200,000 litres per second. The River Waikato then continues on for another 425 kms to the sea near Auckland. It’s the same river we walked along while house sitting in Tirau late last year. We also had lunch at Acacia Bay which is also on the northern end of Lake Taupo, tucked around the corner from the main waterway. Very protected.
The other night we walked to the local pub to watch the Wallabies play the USA in the World Cup. A big win for the Wallabies – yeh! Aussies are not very popular in NZ at the moment – a long standing friendly competitive thing between NZ and Australia. Well sort of friendly I guess!! We hate to think what will happen if the Wallabies happen to win the cup – we might have to leave the country!
Heading back to Manna tomorrow.
Cheers to everyone
love Di and Reg
