We flew from New Plymouth to Queenstown, picked up our hire car and headed north to Lake Wanaka. We’d booked a local B&B for a few nights. Wanaka is a lively town sitting on the shores of Lake Wanaka and surrounded by mountains. Beautiful. Spent our first day visiting some vineyards at nearby Cromwell. Cromwell is a small village with lots of old buildings and history. Checked out the Northburn Winery for some wine tasting – quite nice – before heading into the hills. Visited the Mt Difficulty Winery – a bit more inspiring. Reg particularly enjoyed their Riesling. Amazing views back over the vineyard and down into the valley. Lovely restaurant. We also visited the very famous Rippon Winery – wines lovely – views over Lake Wanaka magnificent!
We decided to try and find some snow so we drove up a very slippery mountain road to Treble Cone – the local ski field. The drive was absolutely stunning – views took our breath away. We probably took twice as long to get there – numerous stops for photos. A very patient Reg!! We arrived safely at the car park and caught the ski lift to the ski fields. Had lots of fun playing in the snow. Not a lot of snow at the moment – apparently not a good season – so snow making machines going full blast. Lots of skiers making the most of it.
After our time in Wanaka we drove south to Lake Manapouri. We’d found an apartment online called Captain’s Lookout – great price – great location. Sitting up on a hill overlooking the lake. We were both quite emotional when we arrived – the views are just fantastic! More than we had hoped for. We are here for just over a week. Time to put our feet up and take it all in. An amazing place!
Cheers and love
Di and Reg
