We’ve had a lovely time at Lake Manapouri. Lots of local walks and drives. Our big day out was to Doubtful Sound a beautiful fiord that winds it’s way inland from the coast. We caught a small boat from the Manapouri Marina over to the west side of the lake, then a bus over the mountains, then a much larger boat along Doubtful Sound to the open sea. The Fiordland region of NZ is quite isolated, and the length of our journey and the different modes of transport just confirms just how off the “beaten track” these areas are. Not sure how the first settlers managed!
The trip by bus was interesting, climbing up and over steep mountains – lovely views. We arrived at the Doubtful Sound Marina – tiny with just a small group of buildings surrounded by water and bush – and caught the next boat. It was a relaxing trip along the sound, the turn out into the open sea and back again was quite exciting. Everyone was keeping watch for Bluenose Dolphins as we sailed along. Happy to report we saw some – playing in the water, following the boat. More excitement! There are lots of little water ways or arms that branch off the fiord and we headed down one – beautiful calm waters – lovely reflections. The boat driver turned off the engines and everyone was asked to be quiet – no talking or taking photos. We just drifted – absolute silence. Then it was back along the fiord – just chilling out – taking in more wonderful views from the boat.
We left Doubtful Sound Marina, got back on the bus, and headed back to Lake Manapouri. On the way we visited an underground hydro power station. Drove down underground on the bus, doing a very tricky turn at the bottom of the tunnel. A very interesting visit – lots of engineering initiative and history. A really relaxing day – arrived back at the Manapouri Marina tired but happy.
Another treat was a drive to the south coast – very windy and wild. Also repeated a drive from the past to Milford Sound. Still as beautiful as we remembered. It will be sad to leave our apartment. It has been a real home away from home. Definitely a place to remember!
Bye again
Love Di and Reg
