We have settled into our little Victorian Terrace in Cambridge. It’s in Romsey Town, a development dating from the late 1800’s. It is full of narrow streets with terraced houses fronting right onto the road – hardly anyone has a front garden and if they do it’s tiny. More of a place to store the wheelie bins than anything. We love it here! We are a minutes walk from Mill St which has lots of cafes, two small supermarkets, a fruit and veg shop, second hand furniture and charity shops. Also St Philips – an Anglican church that seems to be very involved in the local community. We have already checked it out and have been made very welcome. Romsey Town originally housed many railway workers and their families, but these days many houses are rented to students that attend Cambridge University. There are still many locals but the feeling has apparently changed heaps in recent years. I guess it’s very tempting to take advantage of the very buoyant student rental market.
Romsey Town is a 20minute walk to Cambridge city centre with all its amazing college and university buildings, museums, cafes, beautiful river and shops. There is a major railway line that divides the main city from Romsey Town. Fortunately there is a good bridge spanning the tracks – makes the walk into the city much easier! You can catch the train from Cambridge to London in under an hour so some people live here and commute to London for work. Of course there are lots of people employed locally at the university or linked industries so they don’t have to travel quite so far. Cambridge is a real bicycle town – most places are in easy biking distance and parking in the city centre is pretty impossible so it all makes sense! Also a cheap alternative for students. Having all the bicycles about really adds to the character of the place. I like it!
More about our little house. It has a narrow entrance hall, lounge/dining area, and small kitchen downstairs. Upstairs are two bedrooms, an office, and bathroom. The house is basically one room wide – and a narrow room at that. But it is very homey and cute. We have two cats to look after – Peggy and Betsy. Peggy is lying in front of me as I type, and Betsy is sitting on a bright red rug in the back porch grooming herself. Very peaceful except Peggy is purring like a little freight train! Can’t complain – it is a lovely contented sound. Makes you feel happy!
Bye again
Love

PS We have a handy local pub just around the corner. Have heard they do a great curry on a Wednesday night – must check it out! Will report later.

What a lovely house. I guess you will be checking out the “Local” for some of the red stuff!!! I could live in a house like that so compact and not far from shops. Looks like the cat has adopted you, makes me want one. All good here, was freezing last night, but today is nice and sunny. Hope you get lots of great weather so you can get out and enjoy Cambrige.
