- On the road – Paris, Lyon and Spiez
Yesterday in Paris was spent zipping around on the metro. Caught our local train, changed to another line, and then a walk up to Montmartre. Great views over Paris. Also walked through the La Basilique du Sacre Coeur – huge cathedral sitting on top of the hill. There was a service on so needed to be super quiet but able to take some lovely photos. For a large prominent church in Paris it is relatively simple inside. We then wandered around the Montmartre area – little narrow side streets with little tourist shops and cafes. A lot of artists have lived in this area in the past – very famous for its bohemian lifestyle. Then we walked down the hill to see the Moulin Rouge – renowned dance hall where can-can dancers have preformed for over a hundred years. Considered rather risque in its time – maybe less so these days. Then it was a coffee at Starbucks and a couple of metro trains home. Its a real adventure being on the underground. Hopping on and off, tunnels between different lines. Another world really. A chill afternoon watching another movie and preparing ourselves for a night out – meeting friends nearby for dinner. As I have said many times – it never rains but pours with us. All or nothing!!
Last nights dinner was great, food and wine excellent, company exceptional. We house sat for Stephanie in Norway in 2009. Great memories of our time there. Stephanie now lives full time in Paris and is now married to Fred. It was great to hear all their news – we are so blessed to have friends in so many places.
Now today has been quiet. We walked through the local streets – great little market on the way – to the Pantheon – a huge historical building here in the Latin Quarter. Then on to the Luxembourg Gardens. Lovely pond with people sailing little model boats, lots of walkways, statues, tennis courts and playing fields. Heaps of joggers out for a Sunday morning run. Really nice time strolling along. We walked back through some little side streets, passed the Pantheon again, then visited St Etienne-du-Mont – a local church – before heading home. We bought some yummy bread, some chesse and coppa – cured meat, olives and sun dried tomatoes, for a picnic lunch in our room. Watched a movie and just basically having a rest. Off for another walk later before packing up again. Bus to Lyon in the morning. We are pooped!
Love Di and Reg
