Just a little update and some more photos – can’t help myself! We have settled into our latest house sit – this time in the hamlet of Perchede, in the region of Gers, in south-west France. Travelling from Thuir was uneventful – bus into Perpignan, train to Narbonne, then train to Toulouse. Jumped on the bus to the Toulouse Airport to be picked up by Sally. The airport is easily accessible when travelling from Perchede – much better than fighting your way through city centre traffic! Spent a couple of nights with Sally and Chris before they headed off to Paris and then on to the UK. It was nice to get to know them a little and get a feel for their life here in France.
This is quite a busy house sit. We have two Staffordshire Bull Terriers – Medlar (male, 9 years old) and Figue (female, 3 years old) – who were “excessively affectionate” for the first few days – apparently very normal for them when there’s new people about. They’ve relaxed a lot and the household is now relatively calm – whew!! There’re also two horses to look after – Squiggles and Doc. Squiggles is 35 – a bit on the skinny side but seems happy and healthy for his age. Both Squiggles and Doc are friendly and easy to handle. Our animal routine is set. Who gets what/when/how is written down on a big bit of paper so we don’t forget. Thank goodness! The dogs have two local walks a day – wonderful views across farmland, vineyards, and back towards Perchede. The horses come up to the stables for food, but spend most of their time out in the paddock. They also have their horse blankets on overnight – things are definitely cooling down. So there’s plenty happening – enough to keep us out of mischief for the time being. After all the socializing in Thuir it’s probably a good thing. There is a limit!
Perchede is tiny – a few houses and a large, very old church. Our house is set high on a hill above the hamlet – surrounded by countryside, the odd house dotted about. No local shops so we need to travel to buy groceries – mainly in Air-sur-l’Adour – and fresh bread everyday – in Nogaro. We have a very cute red mini to drive around so we’re quite independent on this house sit. Medlar and Figue love to go for a drive and are quite content to sit in the car while we collect our daily baguette and a little pastry for morning tea. Had a wander along the main street of Nogaro this morning – some amazing old buildings. Have started to find different ways home – winding our way along narrow country roads and visiting little rural villages. Haven’t ventured much further but it will happen. Lots to see in this area so looking forward to hitting the road. Will be happy to report on our findings.
Love to everyone
Di and Reg
