A big happy New Year to family and friends wherever you may be. We were as boring as ever – no party, no bubbles to celebrate, a reasonably early night. But did hear fireworks in the distance – not sure if that counts as seeing the new year in! Had a very quiet day yesterday – New Year’s Day. The boys left their toys in the shed – no chainsaws, leaf blower or lawn mower going. The JCB – backhoe tractor thingy – was stationary for the first time in ages. We did take Frodo for a walk; down to the lake and back up through the gardens. Chris tried to coax him into both the deeper pond near the old swimming pool and the shallow pond in front of the main house – no success! Lots of excitement as Frodo ran in circles around the waters edge, stopping to peer into the water, leaning over to get a little bit closer. I’m sure he wondered who the “other” dog was looking back at him. But no swims at this stage – he is so close to jumping in – but not just yet!
Now you may not realize it but I am the only girl at Mourne Park. Reg, Chris, Maurey the horse, and Frodo the dog, are all boys. Even the beautiful white swan that has recently made the lake it’s new home appears to be a boy – apparently they have thicker necks for fighting! Frodo is rarely inside with me these days – he spends most of his time out and about doing his thing while Reg and Chris deal with the piles of fallen autumn leaves or mow the grass. Definitely one of the boys! He now also sits in the cab of the JCB while the chainsaws are going – much safer. He is yet to jump out – it’s quite a distance for a little dog so maybe he’ll stay put. We can only hope. He sits proudly on the drivers seat supervising the workers or peeking around the cabin door to get a closer look. Collecting wood is a continual task at this house sit – especially now the days are getting colder. Still have some faint hope for snow! If Frodo does stay at home with me I try and take him out for a walk or two. Such a laugh to watch him darting here and there, checking under every tree and bush, rolling in everything possible, racing across fields, surveying the land so to speak. The king overseeing his little kingdom! Such a character – we just love having him here.
We’ve had no more visits to hardware shops looking “longingly” at tools and toys but Reg and Chris spend lots of time watching YouTube videos showing the latest in power drills, electronic gadgets, wood splitters, etc etc etc. I just shake my head and sigh! I am counting on at least some of you feeling sorry for me! The only respite I get is when Alan brings Minnie – a very cute black and white Jack Russell – for a walk. One more girl in the mix!! Though I must admit her main focus is running and playing with Frodo. They are both so full of energy – their little legs move like flashes of light as they chase each other. If only I could move half as quickly I’d be a thin as a whippet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound – sadly that’s not the case!
We had a lovely evening recently with Brian, Valene and their three girls – Reannah, Jessica and Daisy. Always lots of fun – heaps of food and lively conversation. Other than that – apart from a trip to the supermarket in Kilkeel – always exciting (!?!?) – we have just stayed at home. That’s it for us this time. Catch up again soon.
Love as always
Di and Reg
