Our time in Uzer is coming to an end – always surprises me when it’s time to leave. It kinda sneaks up me somehow! We’ve continued to explore the local area – took another amazing back road into Bagneres the other day – via the village of L’Argagnat. Lovely views back to Uzer as we climbed, wonderful mountain vistas ahead. Snow on the mountain tops. Also took Balto into Vallon du Salut – a park in Bagneres. Lots of streams and walkways. More beautiful autumn colours – a bit of a theme of late! Still haven’t really got to know our house sit cat -Titi. Occasionally says hello but generally keeps her distance. Very independent.
We’d had snow predicted for Uzer several times over the last few weeks – but with no results! So very excited to wake up last Friday to a beautiful white winters wonderland!! Gorgeous! Oephnix and Coonix – our horses – were very happy to see us when we went to check on them and even happier to go into the stables. It continued snowing for a couple of days – the horses spent part of the day in one of the paddocks and the nights back in the stables. It was great to see them running like crazy when let loose in the morning – like kids let out of the classroom at lunch time. They just loved the freedom. We were a bit spoiled though. Kelly – who lives in the village and actually owns Coonix – did most of the work. Mucking out, feeding, moving the horses around. Helped out by her mother and sister. Nice to get to know some of the locals – unfortunately their English is limited and as you know our French is minuscule. We all did our best. Anyway the horses are back outside full time. The snow has nearly melted in Uzer and the surrounding countryside – only white patches left on the northern slopes of the many hills and in other shaded areas. We’ve seen lots of changes since we’ve been here. The slow turning of the leaves, the beautiful rich autumn colours, and then the blinding white of the snow. Though I’m not sure what is the whitest – the snow or Reg’s legs. He has been rolling up his trousers when we get some sun – trying to get a tan!! Nothing like wishful thinking.!
Now I have some very sad news. About a month or so ago Balto was diagnosed with a tumour on his back – right next to his spine. Non treatable. The vet was unsure of any time frame etc – to pin things down would have meant some difficult tests. Anyway depending on the type of tumour it was either a year prognosis or maybe as quick as three months. A few days ago Balto started to have trouble holding his weight on his back legs and is getting worse each day. He is comfortable – we have pain relief to give him – and as cheeky as ever. Still wants to fetch his stick but we have had to modify the game to suit his limited movement. We are looking after him the best we can – lots of love – and quietly lots of tears. It has been a joy getting to know him and a real honour to look after him during this time. We are handing over his care to a local couple on Friday – Delphine and Stan. Henry and Anne-Marie will be back next week. Balto is 12 years old. He is one of the most wonderful dogs we have ever known.
Love as always

What a lovely array of photos illustrating a glimpse into your current world. The snow pics are fantastic. Does that mean no more snow at all for the rest of Winter? So sad to hear of Balto’s illness, but what a privilege to have cared for him and had so much fun with him during your time in Uzer. Best wishes for Christmas and your next journey. Looking forward to more photos.
Hi Carol….we should have lots of snow in Canada – arrive late December. Also maybe in Mourne Park when we arrive on Friday. It’s been a bonus having snow here – it’s quite early for this area. Yes, such a privilege to look after Balto – he is such a gentle, loving dog. We’ve definitely had fun with him during our stay. So much character. I’m a bit of a mess actually – lots of tears – but making the most of our time with him.
Reg….. Those white legs, u need lots of sun like were having. 30 degrees in New Plymouth today. And its just gone midnight and its 24 degrees! Safe travels to your next destination.
Lots of love and hugs
