Life has settled down here in outback Canada. We are house sitting a beautiful log cabin on a few acres. Altitude 3200 ft. We’re in a small area called Miocene – 12 kms N/NE of 150 Mile House, British Columbia. It’s situated on Horsefly Rd – the town of Horsefly is another 30 km down the road. Micene has a community centre and a volunteer fire service but isn’t a town. Beautiful area – lots of lakes and Douglas Fir. We live down a side road, just across from Lake Dewar. The lake is frozen over at the moment – a favourite walking spot for Maggie, our house sit dog. Lots of ice fishermen sitting out on the ice – always interesting to stop and have a chat.
Now Maggie is part hound dog – loves to sniff out a trail – has been known to take off for a day or two. Apparently always returns home! Hoping she sticks around while we are looking after her! Maggie has her own little heated house in her own fenced in yard. Her house is very snuggly with a straw floor to keep her comfortable. She comes inside to sleep if the temperature drops too low – but seems quite happy to return to her own little place.
Talking of temperatures we’ve had lots of variation since we’ve arrived. Low as minus 30 overnight, high as plus 2 during the day. We headed into Williams Lake yesterday to shop at Walmart – minus 22 as we drove down the road. Walmart is part of a shopping complex – sits high on a hill overlooking Williams Lake. Nice views as you head back into town. Checked out another beer and wine shop yesterday – there are a few in town. Will do our best to visit them all! Must admit we miss the cheap wine and food prices of France – but you can’t have everything! We eventually headed back to Miocene – boot full of supplies. Beautiful snow covered forests and farmland on the way. Passed a man clearing his driveway. Busy pushing his “snow thrower” – snow arching into the air. Part of life here. But we are hardly suffering. Our car has heated seats so feels quite luxurious as you drive along. The log cabin has toasty underfloor heating. Both bottom and toes are being very spoilt!
Lots of snow here – even when we have a “heat wave” it still remains thick on the ground. Still, we tend to give walking on the lake a miss when the temperature rises. Maybe a bit over cautious but the alternative isn’t appealing. Falling through the ice isn’t on our agenda! Can’t imagine how cold the water would be. Brrrrrrrr to say the least!
Love again
Di and Reg
