We are “nesters” and probably one of the most boring couples you know! Life has settled into our usual “stay at home” routine here in the Cariboo. Our main focus is on our house sit dog Maggie – a 10 year old Basset/Hound Dog cross. She lives in her own little heated house in the yard – bit sad really. Not for her – “Princess Maggie” in her own little palace. Sad for us because she’s not with us all the time. I’m always peeking out from the dining room window to see what she’s up too. We usually take her for a couple of walks a day – one in our own little forest, the other down to Lake Dewar – just across the road. Also spend time with her on our deck – she loves to sit nearby – usually close enough for a pat. Especially loves a tummy rub! Snowing or not, sunny or overcast Maggie loves a walk – always sniffing, tail wagging, darting off if she gets a sent.
We have been really blessed to meet the wonderful Hill family – they live just around the corner on Horsefly Rd. Jeremy and Paulina have 6 children – the oldest is only 7 – with another baby due later this month. Jeremy works locally, Paulina is busy at home with the children – also homeschools the eldest two. They have a small farm with cows, pigs, chickens, and a couple of beautiful white Maremma Sheepdogs – so white they nearly get lost in the snow! The dogs live with the animals to keep them safe – quite a few foxes around here. We babysat the youngest four Hill children at our house the other day. Around -8 C when we walked to their place to collect them. Lots of jackets, hats, boots and gloves on little bodies as we prepared to leave. But first we visited the Hill farm animals – Jeremy was home so we had a guided tour. The children were also a fountain of information. Lots of fun. We then headed off along Horsefly Rd and turned down our road – visiting the lake opposite our house on the way. Quite a group – double stroller, two older children, Reg and and I, Maggie on her lead. Lots of unloading and organizing when we arrived at the lake! Had a great chat to one of the ice fisherman – I think he really enjoyed explaining everything to us. First time I’d seen a fishing hole being drilled in the ice – he had a small powered auger – makes life easy. We then packed up again, left the lake and climbed the steep driveway to our house. Whew!! Needed a rest half way!
I’d noticed in the past that big semi-trailers stopped opposite our house and after a few minutes took off again. I was never sure why. But as we left the lake that day we got a chance to talk to a semi driver who was busy removing snow chains from his wheels. He explained that he didn’t need them on once he turned onto Horsefly Rd. Seemed like quite a process – quite a few tires on a semi! So mystery solved!
We really enjoyed babysitting – the children are such a delight. Hope to do it again soon – hint, hint!
Cheers and love
Di and Reg
