Our first couple of months back in South Australia are filled with “mini moves”. We spent a week in Adelaide with family after arriving home from Canada. Next it was on to Berri in the Riverland – Reg’s home town. Stayed a few days at Reg’s brother’s office in central Berri – empty bedrooms at the back. Just around the corner from Reg’s Mum. It was lovely to catch up with Ross and Vera. Also Ron who runs a ceramic business in the backyard shed. Very enjoyable times at morning tea and lunch. Then it was up the road to our first house sit – still in Berri – on the edge of town. Open paddocks across the road. A couple of local kangaroos paid us a visit one morning – quickly took off when I appeared with my camera. Took our house sit homeowner – Shirley – to the Mildura airport to catch her first connecting flight to Texas. Very hot day – plus 40C. Crossed the River Murray near Renmark before heading further inland. The water looks especially inviting on those hot days! Speed boats on the river. The farmland obviously dry as we drove along – dust rising as farmers ploughed up the land for this years crops. Definitely back in Australia!
It was very easy to settle into Shirley’s house. Lots of wide verandahs, heaps of character. Only one house sit pet to care for – Dori. A friendly cat who loves to sit on your lap for a cuddle. Comes and goes through her own little cat door. Nice new Subaru to drive around – easy to shop or visit Mum. Real bonus. Had friends around for a meal – lots of food, lots of wine. Lovely evening – hopefully the first of many. Reg also spent some time with Michael – local winemaker with a vineyard and winery nearby. Nice for Reg to practise his winemaking skills – for those of you who don’t know Reg is a winemaker. Very handy for our lifestyle! We do enjoy a red wine.
We’ve had to temporarily leave Shirley’s house in Berri to house sit in Loxton. Another Riverland town. This time for my daughter Marni and her family. They’ve gone to Thailand for 10 days. Great food, massages everyday, lots of shopping! They took a couple of empty suitcases! They arrive back this afternoon. So we’ll pack up – yet again – and return to Shirley’s house for the next week or so. Now we’ve had 3 pets to look after here in Loxton. Jed and Winston – dog and puppy, and a not so friendly snake. The snake lives in a very, very secure glass cage in the lounge. I did hold him last time we were back in Oz – not my favourite experience – no plans to repeat the exercise. We’ve managed to catch up with a couple of people in Loxton – I used to live here years ago. But overall it’s been a quite time. Toilet training Winston has been interesting – not sure how much progress has been made! Nearly forgot – there’s been some extra activity here at the house. Marni and Matt’s drive has been levelled off and gravel delivered ready to be spread. Been interesting to see the bobcat doing it’s thing; big tip truck backing down the drive to dump its load. Not sure if it qualifies as excitement but we are easily pleased. Should look good when it’s finished.
After our next stint in Berri – looking forward to seeing Dori – it’s off to Kangarilla in the Adelaide Hills for a month. One of my favourite places. No wonder our suitcases are looking a little battered!
Love Di and Reg
