Things are going well here in Kangarilla. Wolf is improving everyday – Sharryn is feeling more like her old self. Reg and I have been helping out – doing bits and pieces, head down just pottering about. But Wolf and Sharryn changed all that yesterday! The vacuum cleaner got turned off mid stream, the car was running and waiting in the driveway, and we were “ordered” to go out for the day! So off we went. Called into Brackenwood Vineyard – old stomping ground for us. Just happened to be driving past – noticed pickers in the vineyard, tractors towing bins – decided to check things out. Most grapes in this area were picked ages ago but there’s a good reason for leaving bunches so late on the vine. They become full of Botrytis – a grey, furry mold. Looks disgusting – even worse before the juice settles in the tank after pressing – but perfect for a Riesling sticky! For those who don’t know what I’m talking about “sticky wine” is a beautiful, golden, sweet dessert wine. Amazing how something so “yuk” can turn into something so “yummy”. Next it was down to the coast – through Willunga – to Silver Sands. Tide was way in – seas rough – gorgeous reflected light on the water. Then back up into the hills. Skirted the town of Myponga on the backroads – great views over the town and back down to the coast. Stopped for yet another photo! Drove on to the impressive Myponga Reservoir and down to Myponga Beach – very cute bay, little houses on the seafront. Then we looped back into the hills again. Winding narrow dirt road, lots of new houses sitting on hobby farms. Passed one very old stone ruin on the side of the road – brought back memories of Europe. Then it was down again to Willunga. Beautiful vineyards, hills in the background, vast blue skies. Fabulous scenery everywhere we went – the Fleurieu Peninsula is stunning. Oohing and aahing all day!
Wolf and Sharryn treated us to lunch last Sunday – went to a great hilltop restaurant called “Our Place” – owned by mutual friend Andy. Great Italian food – set menu for everyone. Platters of pizza, nocci, cold meats, salad, roast pork and veggies, cream filled cannelloni etc being delivered to our table at regular intervals. Also some very nice wine! Over 100 people in the room chatting, eating, drinking – apparently it’s packed every Sunday. Birthdays being celebrated, friends catching up – a great atmosphere. Beautiful views over the hills and down to the coast from the outside patio. Many thanks Wolf and Sharryn – much appreciated!
We head off tomorrow – bus back to the Riverland. House sit for friends Leigh and Julie in Barmera. Feeling a bit sad – will miss dogs Peaches, Lucy and Bella – also horses Tally and Blitz. Not to forget the humans – Wolf and Sharryn. It’s been a joy xx
Love to all
Di and Reg
