We have been busy at Allansfield. Our first campers pitched their tent over Easter – the house and cottage were both full. Warm weather. Children running about – french cricket being played on the grass. Towels hanging on the balustrade to dry after a day at the beach. Next we had friends come to stay – Phil and Annette from South Australia. Enjoyed catching up, lots to talk about. Busy day showing them around Phillip Island – walk to Rhyll Inlet with its vast wetlands, the amazing hides at Swan Lake, Nobbies boardwalk with it’s great views over rocky outcrops and Bass Strait. Didn’t spot any of the local seals but lots of birds perched on the rocks below. Enjoyed a beautiful late afternoon coastal drive from the Nobbies to the Penguin Centre; just in time to see the fairy penguin parade. Loved our time waiting for the penguins to arrive – everyone sitting on concrete grandstands, holding their breath, eyes on the sea. Soft yellow spotlights giving just enough light for the spectators to see without stressing the penguins. No photos allowed. As always the penguins waited until after dark before leaving the water – less risky that way. And although the much feared “predatory birds” had gone for the evening they were still very nervous; looking about, checking the coast was clear, scurrying back into the water if unsure. They gathered into groups – safety in numbers – before waddling quickly across the sand and up a rocky incline to find their burrows in the bushy sand dunes. So cute! Interesting to see them settling in for the night as we made our way back along the boardwalk and path to the Penguin Centre and carpark. Penguins mate for life so each couple has their own burrow. One of the couple seemed to stand outside making lots of noise while the other was inside. Maybe tidying up a little or lighting candles – after all it was mating season! Some didn’t even wait till they got inside but most were discreet!
Thing are changing. Middle of autumn, winter on the horizon. Nice to have the heater on of an evening – I love to snuggle in. The weather is now unpredictable. Beautiful sunny days followed quickly by wild, windy not so sunny ones. Flat bright blue seas changing to a foaming white torrent. White fluffy clouds to black brooding masses – rain just moments away. It is amazing to experience the difference – not sure which I prefer! Sunny days and blue seas are beautiful. A walk along the cliffs near Pyramid Rock yesterday a perfect example. But I must admit wild days make my heart beat that little bit faster! Had an incredible visit to Cape Woolamai recently – amazing photos of the dark threatening sky and wild seas – especially on the western side of the cape. Much more sheltered on the eastern side but still stunning.
We’re off for a mini holiday this weekend. Visiting a farming area called Gelliondale – in the Prom Country, on the way to East Gippsland. Mountains to the north, ocean to the south. Lots to see. Looking forward to it.
