We’ve been away again! This time we headed to East Gippsland – more new horizons – another box to tick. Snowy River Country; made famous by the iconic Aussie poem “The Man from Snowy River” – written by Banjo Paterson in 1890. He also wrote “Waltzing Matilda” in 1895. Our unofficial national anthem! So much to see in East Gippsland – lakes, wide flat coastline, rolling green hills and beautiful valleys, mountains and national forests. Really worth a visit. Anyway – back to our little holiday! We’d booked a caravan in Swan Reach – a small village between Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. The caravan was nearly new so had all the bells and whistles – flash recliners, washing machine, queen size bed. Home away from home. Host Peter was very friendly – and unfortunately we ended up seeing a lot of him!!! The TV didn’t work, the washing machine just beeped at me, and the toilet leaked!! Felt very sorry for him! Despite the problems we enjoyed our stay – very peaceful.
Now – no surprises – we did our usual “days out” while on holiday. Morning tea packed – thermos full – bums on eats as we wound our way along mountain tracks and lakeside roads. Loved the back road between Orbost and Buchan – we slowed right down – snail pace – and wound down the windows. Just listerned to the birds tweet and felt the breeze on our faces. Imagined ourselves back in the time of horse and buggy. Felt very connected to everything around us. So peaceful. There were lots of trees still blackened by a recent bushfire – always interesting to see how the bush comes back to life. Part of the cycle of regeneration in Aussie. Beautiful views as we approached Buchan – green hills, deep valleys – rivers and streams bubbling along. Lunch at the Buchan Pub before looping back to Swan Reach. Other “days out” included “koala spotting” on Raymond Island – just a short ferry ride from Paynesville; a drive on the Great Alpine Road to Omeo – checked out the Ensay Winery on the way; visits to the lakeside towns of Metung and Lakes Entrance; hiking along the Mackenzie River Rainforest Walk – on the way to Cann River – interesting swing bridges to cross; and morning tea in Bruthen. Phew – feel tired just writing about it! But don’t worry. Despite the miles we covered we had heaps of time just to sit back and chill. We ended up having lunch with friends at Mirboo North on the way home – nice to finish off our break with Jenny and Tony. They have just gotten engaged so very starry eyed – though I must admit Reg and I are still on the smitten side. Very blessed!
Love Di and Reg
PS enjoy the photos
