We’ve been away for a mini break – left Phillip Island and it’s beautiful beaches and headed for the mountains. It’s been a busy summer and we needed some peace and quiet. Booked a cabin in the tiny mountain village of Tanjil Bren – permanent population of 9. A few kilometers from Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort – situated on the Mt Baw Baw Plateau in the great Dividing Range. A good couple of hours north of us. More if you avoid the highways which of course we do. Very popular for skiing in the winter – very quiet this time of year! Perfect!
We set off early Tuesday morning, shopped at Drouin and headed up the main road to Neerim, then on to Noojee. Stopped at the Noojee Trestle Bridge and then the Tooronga Falls. Lots of rushing water – little baby falls. Very windy road as we headed towards Tanjil Bren. We could see smoke in the distance but no sign of any fire trucks etc so continued on. Turned out to be a controlled burn off so no problems – mini break in tact! Arrived mid afternoon. Tanjil Bren is set in a small cleared area on a bend in the road – few opportunities to build a community on the steep mountainside. Our cabin was up a dirt track on the edge of the village – easy to find. Everything in Tanjil Bren is easy to find! Our cabin was called the Reindeer Lodge – lots of character – lots of stuffed reindeer heads inside! All those eyes watching you! Nice verandas to sit on – beautiful gardens. Lots of King Parrots hanging around waiting to be fed at the feed box. Very friendly. Happy to sit on your hand or shoulder. We unpacked and settled in. No noise, no people – just us.
The next day we took a short – again very windy – drive to Baw Baw Alpine Resort. Beautiful views south towards Wilson’s Prom. Ski slopes nearby – chair lifts hanging in the air – empty and still. Resort chalets closed. Just the odd maintenance vehicle whipping about. Can only imagine how different it would be in the winter. Also checked out a waterfall at the back of Tanjil Bren. Drove several kilometers up a narrow dirt track – hardly used – debris across the road. We made it as far as we could and walked to the falls – quite speccy. Reg had to navigate a “5 point turn” to turn around. Not a lot of room – steep drop on one side! Happy to head home to Reindeer Lodge. Nibbles and wine on the veranda after our adventure.
Back again at Allansfield. Full of guests over the weekend. Back to work!
Love Di and Reg
