We’ve been away!! Borrowed a tent and some camping gear and headed north to the Victorian High Country. We’d booked a powered site – including ensuite – at the Myrtleford Holiday Park. Myrtleford is a small town on the Great Alpine Highway between Wangaratta and Bright. We arrived mid afternoon and with threatening skies quickly pitched our tent. Great spot – lovely overarching trees and grassed area with our little ensuite handy. Not long and the wine was out and we had settled in. The park has a large kitchen/living/dining complex and since we were the only ones in a tent – everyone else had caravans, motorhomes etc – we had it all to ourselves. Kitchen had everything we needed plus some. Wide screen TV and very comfy couches in the living room. Hardly roughing it!!
We headed into Bright the next day and then on to Harrietville for morning tea. The Ovens River runs through the centre of the village – currently very swollen and fast flowing. Grassed picnic area on its banks. Thermos out again! Then it was up into the mountains towards the Mt Hotham Ski Resort – speccy views on the way. Temperature dropping to freezing – remnants of snow on the side of the road. Interesting to see the “snow measuring poles” that keep people from “careering off the path” during the winter months. Not a great option! Very steep drop to the valley below. We passed through the resort and continued on to Dinner Plains – had our picnic lunch in the cold – turned around – and made our way back to Myrtleford.
Checked out the Beechworth area the next day. Visited the Woolshed Falls then took the Gorge Scenic Drive – lovely old stone bridge – more beautiful views. Picnic lunch on the edge of Lake Sambell in Beechworth before we looped our way back home – visiting the lovely village of Yackandandah and driving through Happy Valley as we went. Arrived back at the holiday park to find our tent semi-collapsed – had to pull it down to do some repairs. All good!
The next morning was pretty low key. A lovely local walk along the Ovens River – just happened to pass the Michelini winery and cellar door on the way. One problem – we had some extra “baggage” on the last leg of the journey. Two bottles of sparking Merlot and one bottle of Marzemino. Both top class and worth the effort. Drove to Lake Buffalo that afternoon – great countryside – lots of vineyards. Resisted the cellar doors!
Our last day in Myrtleford was especially quiet. We got chatting with Pete and Sue – checked out their lovely motorhome and had wine and nibbles with them that evening. They have lived full time in their motorhome for five years and have really enjoyed the freedom of the open road and the ever changing scenery. Something that appeals to us – surprise, surprise!!
Love again
Di and Reg
