Well here we are – safely out of COVID quarantine and settled into Berri again. Our time in quarantine seems like a distant memory and although it “could” count as an “adventure” it’s not necessarily one we want to repeat! Berri is one of a number of small towns in the Riverland of South Australia; an irrigation area known for its wine, fruit, vegetables and in more recent times almonds. The River Murray is its main source of water. At the moment levels are high and due to get even higher – there’s been huge falls of rain in the eastern states. Most of it ends up in the River Murray and passes through this area before making its way to the coast. It’s very dry and arid here. The river is beautiful with numerous creeks running into it – lots of lovely camping spots. The towns have grassed riverfronts with bright coloured flower beds and shady trees. The irrigated properties have some form of green throughout the year – new fresh leaves or cover crops. But the land away from these little oases of green can be extremely flat, dry, and desolate – especially in the summer months.
We’ve been packing the odd picnic and heading to different areas of the river – thermos at the ready. Aeroguard also at hand – definitely back in Oz! Blow flies and mosquitos are so annoying!! It’s quite an adventure bumping along dusty dirt tracks or maneuvering past boggy puddles after a good rain. Always a challenge to find the shadiest tree and the best view of the river or creeks. Anyway, I got to thinking about all the beautiful rivers, creeks and canals we have visited on our travels – and there have been a few! Large, small, and barely a trickle. Navigating cities, towns, villages, mountains, open countryside. Varied and interesting. Wild and rushing, reflective and calm. I sorted through some old photos and have included them below. Enjoy!
